1 in 5 people may carry this hidden genetic heart risk

New research involving over 20,000 patients indicates that elevated Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels may significantly increase cardiovascular risk, persisting even after standard treatments. Approximately one in five individuals carries high Lp(a), which often goes undetected due to a lack of symptoms, yet it can exacerbate heart disease risk. The findings, presented at the SCAI 2026 Scientific Sessions, suggest that those with high Lp(a) might require more aggressive management of other cardiovascular risk factors.
