AI memory shortage threatens to trigger geopolitical strain, warns SK Group chief
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won warned that the global shortage of artificial intelligence memory chips could escalate into geopolitical tensions, predicting demand will exceed supply through 2027. Major customers are requesting 60 to 100 percent more AI memory, while overall semiconductor demand is projected to grow by at least 50 to 60 percent. To mitigate the crisis, SK hynix is expediting the opening of its Yongin facility, moving the date forward to February 2027 from May.
