Appendix removal linked with lower colon cancer risk in study
A study found that patients who underwent appendectomy for an inflamed appendix had a 58% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer compared to those treated with antibiotics. The analysis included over 30,000 cases, revealing cancer diagnoses in 0.7% of the surgery group versus 1.7% in the antibiotic group. The findings suggest a need for careful consideration of long-term cancer risks in appendicitis treatment decisions.
