China's BYD enters Japan's mini-car market with low-cost EV

China's BYD launched its Racco electric mini-car in Japan, aiming to capture a share of the competitive kei-car market dominated by local brands like Nissan and Honda. Priced at 1.95 million yen ($12,213) before taxes and subsidies, the Racco undercuts Nissan's Sakura, Japan's best-selling electric mini-car, although it is less attractive after government incentives are applied. BYD targets 10,000 orders by the end of 2026, with plans for promotional campaigns if initial demand falls short.
