Extreme heat puts South Asia’s jobs and growth at risk: World Bank
A World Bank report revealed that extreme heat is costing South Asia the equivalent of 31 million full-time jobs annually and could shrink the region's economy by nearly 7% by 2050. The report emphasizes the need for governments to invest in heat-resilient cities to protect workers and sustain economic growth, especially as the region prepares to add 280 million working-age individuals by 2050. By 2070, approximately 520 million people in South Asia may face dangerous heat for at least one month each year, significantly impacting productivity and health systems.
