Fast-track courts in slow lane now, backlog 2.5 lakh cases

Fast-track special courts in India have a backlog of 2.5 lakh cases, failing to meet their mandate of completing trials within a year for offences related to rape and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. In 2025, only 66,500 of the 1.4 lakh registered cases were disposed of, maintaining a pendency of over 2 lakh cases since the courts were established in 2019. This ongoing issue raises concerns about the effectiveness of the fast-track system intended to expedite justice.
