GST 2.0 may scrap arrest powers, raise prosecution bar
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council is considering significant reforms, including removing arrest powers from GST officers and requiring court orders for arrests at its October 7 meeting. The proposal also aims to raise the threshold for criminal prosecution from ₹1 crore to ₹5 crore, focusing on serious offences while excluding routine disputes. These changes could reshape tax enforcement in India.
