GST arrest powers on way out amid concerns over taxmen’s overreach
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime is set to remove arrest powers for tax authorities, addressing concerns over their overreach. In 72,393 GST offence cases from 2021-22 to 2024-25, 887 arrests were made. The GST Council will discuss this proposal on October 7, aiming to boost investor sentiment and alleviate fears among traders and businesses.
