Pharma companies in a flux over Trump's 200% tariff move on generics
US President Donald Trump announced that generic medicines imported into the US will face tariffs of 100% starting August 2028, escalating to 200% the following year unless companies relocate manufacturing to the US. This move poses a significant challenge for India's $30 billion pharmaceutical industry, which supplies nearly 47% of generic prescriptions in the US and exports $10 billion worth of pharmaceuticals to the American market. The tariffs could disrupt supply chains and increase costs for both Indian manufacturers and US consumers.
