RBI to trial polymer currency notes, subsidiary floats global tender
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will trial polymer currency notes, launching a global tender through its subsidiary, Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Mudran Private Limited (BRBNMPL), for 68,000 reams of polymer sheets. This initiative comes as the RBI aims to enhance currency durability and combat counterfeiting, following a reported increase in fake notes to 2.3 lakh pieces in 2025-26. Bids for the tender are due by August 18, with the polymer sheets set to be used at both BRBNMPL and Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India presses.
