Researchers find genetic answer to lung cancer in those who never smoked

Researchers identified a rare mutation in the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor gene, linked to a 25-fold lung cancer risk in non-smokers. This mutation, EGFR T790M, increases lung cancer odds by over 60 times for non-smokers and 10 times for smokers. The findings suggest future lung cancer screenings may incorporate genetic risk factors, potentially changing current practices.
