SC proposes 'no insurance, no fuel' rule; extends mandatory third-party cover for new vehicles

The Supreme Court of India proposed a 'no insurance, no fuel' rule to combat the high rate of uninsured vehicles, which currently stands at 56%. The court extended the mandatory third-party insurance period for new private cars from three to four years and for two-wheelers from five to six years. Additionally, it directed the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India to develop a pilot project linking fuel supply to valid insurance status, aiming to enhance compliance and road safety.
