Sexually transmitted infections are surging in Europe

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported a significant rise in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Europe, with gonorrhoea cases exceeding 100,000 in 2024, more than tripling since 2015. Syphilis cases also more than doubled to around 46,000, indicating a genuine increase in transmission rather than just improved testing. Public health experts suggest reduced condom use and changing sexual behaviors may contribute to this trend, although evidence remains inconclusive.
