UPI stays free; select merchants may pay MDR
The Indian government confirmed that UPI payments will remain free for users, with potential nominal merchant discount rates (MDR) applicable only to select transactions above a threshold. This change aims to ensure UPI's sustainability and security, following a surge in transaction volumes, with 2,366 crore transactions worth ₹29.9 lakh crore processed in July 2026.
