Vande Mataram’s insult may soon be punishable offence, Amit Shah set to table Bill

The Indian government plans to introduce the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to criminalize insults to the national song Vande Mataram. Home Minister Amit Shah will present the bill in the Rajya Sabha on the first day of the Monsoon Session, aiming to provide Vande Mataram with the same legal protections as the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana. Currently, there are no specific laws against obstructing or insulting the singing of Vande Mataram.
