Punjab's groundwater extraction rate reached 152% according to the 2025-26 Dynamic Groundwater Assessment, with 72% of its 153 blocks classified as over-exploited. This unsustainable use primarily supports irrigation for rice and wheat, impacting small farmers negatively. Urgent measures are needed to address this crisis and ensure sustainable water management in the region.
