Why is the kidney’s glucose threshold 180 mg/dL? Expert explains
Dr. Sumiran Mahajan, a nephrologist at KIMS Hospitals Thane, explained that the kidneys filter glucose and can only reabsorb it up to a threshold of 180 mg/dL. When blood sugar exceeds this level, excess glucose spills into the urine, leading to symptoms like frequent urination and excessive thirst. Prolonged high blood sugar can stress the kidneys and increase the risk of diabetic kidney disease, a major cause of chronic kidney disease globally.
