35 hydrogen trains planned as Indian Railways seeks cheaper green fuel
- India's first hydrogen train began running between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana on 17 July, carrying up to 2,600 passengers.
- That is more than the German or Chinese hydrogen trains manage, and the engine is built with Indian technology.
- Under a scheme called Hydrogen for Heritage, 34 more are planned for the country's hill and heritage routes.
- Each train costs about Rs 80 crore, with a further Rs 70 crore needed for refuelling infrastructure on every route.
