Assam arrests over 500 in child marriage crackdown as cases reach 476

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on X on Thursday that Assam had arrested 557 people in 476 child marriage cases.
He said more arrests were pending, with the stepped-up drive running every year since 2023.
The tally is 125 more arrests and 113 more cases than the 2024 drive, when 432 people were held.
A government assessment found cases fell 81% in 1,132 villages across 20 districts by 2023-24.
