California signs laws to protect children from social media and AI chatbots
- Gavin Newsom has signed laws penalising large social media firms up to $1 million per child, where negligence is found.
- Companies are also barred from serving addictive feeds to anyone under 16 who lives in California.
- It follows a law last year requiring AI chatbots to remind minors every three hours that they are not human.
- The case also made them refer users expressing suicidal thoughts to crisis services, and report those referrals.
