CBFC introduces new film certification rules after 35 years, tightens violence and sexual content norms
- The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has revised India’s film certification guidelines, replacing the 1991 framework after 35 years.
- Films should not glorify or justify violence, crime, drug use, smoking or excessive cruelty under the new rules.
- Sexual violence should be minimised and, when essential to the story, shown without graphic detail; degrading portrayals of women are also restricted.
- The revised guidelines also cover children, vulnerable groups, religion, national security and courts, while asking the Board to balance restrictions with creative freedom.
