Centre gives refiners 60 days to process imported raw sugar
- The Centre relaxed rules for 1 million tonnes of duty-free raw sugar, giving refiners a two-month window from the filing of the bill of entry to process and sell shipments.
- The October 31 import deadline remains, but late arrivals can now be refined and sold through November and December.
- The move aims to improve supplies and ease retail price pressures after sugar prices reached around ₹70 per kg in major metro cities.
- India’s 2025-26 sugar production is estimated at 30.6 million tonnes, down from an earlier estimate of 34.3 million tonnes.
