First nationwide brick kiln map reveals major pollution hotspots across India
- On September 25, researchers unveiled India’s first nationwide map of brick kilns using satellite data.
- The study mapped kiln locations and technologies across India between 2019 and 2025.
- India has over 1 million kilns, which burn about 35 million tonnes of coal and 25 million tonnes of biomass yearly.
- Around 60% of kilns are in the Indo-Gangetic Plains, with Uttar Pradesh having the highest number.
