France’s 143-year-old Limoges town hall largely destroyed in fire amid French protests
- The 143-year-old town hall in Limoges, built in 1883, was largely destroyed after being set on fire on Saturday.
- Its roof has collapsed onto the lower floors and two-thirds of the exterior has gone, local prefect Maurice Barate said.
- He called it a deliberate act by hooligans and a catastrophe for heritage. The building was listed as a landmark in 1975.
- It burnt as protests over living costs turned violent nationwide. PM Sebastien Lecornu blamed the “ultra-left”.
