FSSAI proposes front-of-pack warnings for high-fat, sugar and salt foods
- FSSAI has now proposed warning labels on the front of packaged foods, after previously deciding against introducing them.
- The food regulator told the Supreme Court that a red hexagonal label would flag products high in any two of fat, sugar or salt.
- The labels would read “HIGH FAT”, “HIGH SUGAR”, “HIGH SALT” or “HIGHLY SWEETENED BEVERAGE” to help consumers make informed choices.
- The proposal follows public criticism over the earlier decision to drop the labels, with reports saying the move came amid pressure from the food industry.
