Himalayan glaciers are melting twice as fast as they were in 2000
- The Hindu Kush Himalaya lost 12 per cent of its glacier area between 1990 and 2020, and 9 per cent of its ice reserves vanished.
- The rate of loss has doubled since 2000, with up to 27 metres of ice thickness gone since 1975.
- The Ganga basin lost 21 per cent of its glacier area, the Brahmaputra 16 and the Indus about 6.
- Nearly two billion people downstream depend on that meltwater, from ten major Asian river systems.
