Human waste contributes to glacier melting on Mount Everest, study finds
- A new study finds human activity at Everest Base Camp is accelerating melt on the Khumbu Glacier.
- Climbers and guides produce more than 6,000 litres of urine daily, much of which is discharged directly onto the glacier.
- Researchers estimate urine alone contributes to the melting of around 154 tonnes of ice each spring.
- Fuel burned at Base Camp causes far more melt, with human activities together estimated to melt nearly 2,500 tonnes of ice and snow annually.
