India faces drier reservoirs as weak monsoon and strong El Niño threaten a warmer winter
- India’s monsoon is ending about 13% below the long-term average, leaving reservoirs drier than usual.
- Around 161 reservoirs are over 32 billion cubic metres below last year’s levels, raising water concerns.
- Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh recorded some of the biggest rainfall deficits this monsoon.
- A strengthening Super El Niño could bring a warmer winter, low snowfall and spill over into the 2027 monsoon.
