India is giving every doctor a unique ID number — and making it public
- The National Medical Commission — India's top medical education and practice regulator — proposed a Unique Identification Number for every registered doctor in India on August 11.
- Patients can look up any doctor's qualifications, speciality, suspensions and blacklisting history on the public-facing section of the register.
- A doctor with the UID can practise anywhere in India without re-registering in each state — ending a major bureaucratic hurdle for doctors.
