India is restoring traditional step wells and its not just aesthetics
- Communities across India are restoring traditional water structures, including stepwells, to address severe water crisis.
- In Rajasthan’s Alwar, the restored Moosi Rani Sagar stepwell now holds water up to 30 feet deep after being heavily contaminated until 2021.
- Traditional systems such as stepwells, johads and tankas help slow rainwater and allow it to seep into the ground, replenishing groundwater.
- Govt water programmes are reviving traditional methods, with groundwater recharge rising from 14 billion cubic metres in 2017 to 25 billion in 2024.
