India’s railway network is 99.6% electric, yet diesel engines still remain essential
- Indian Railways has electrified 69,873 of 70,142 route km, taking its broad-gauge network beyond 99.6% electrification.
- Diesel use fell from 293 crore litres in 2015-16 to 108 crore litres in 2024-25, a drop of about 63%.
- Diesel engines are still needed for emergencies, shunting, strategic use and routes where electric systems may fail.
