Miami student Gabriella co-invents patented tomatoes designed to taste like meat
- Gabriella Rothberg, a 17-year-old student in Miami, is named as co-inventor on a US patent for genetically engineered tomatoes.
- She said the aim is that you bite into a tomato and it tastes like a hamburger, by making the plant produce an iron-rich molecule.
- She had the idea at 15 while making a sandwich, and hopes such vegetables could also help where meat is costly.
- The work is still experimental. The tomatoes have not been taste tested, and it is not known whether the method will work.
