NASA sent 32 chicken eggs to space in a KFC-backed experiment
- In 1989, NASA sent 32 fertilised chicken eggs into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery to study embryo development in microgravity.
- The experiment was inspired by John Vellinger, who came up with the idea as a schoolboy and later worked with KFC on the project.
- KFC provided funding and helped develop the incubator, with the experiment later becoming known as “Chix in Space.”
- One of the chicks that hatched after the mission was named “Kentucky” after KFC’s home state.
