New study raises fresh concerns over NFL players’ brain health
- A new study estimates that up to 97.7% of NFLNational Football League players who died between 2016 and 2021 may have had chronic traumatic encephalopathy CTE, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head impacts.
- Researchers examined 878 former players, including 235 who had donated their brains for research. Of those donors, 215 were found to have CTE.
- Lead author Daniel Daneshvar said NFL players have a roughly four times higher rate of death from neurodegenerative disease than the general population.
- Researchers urged the NFL to take steps to reduce repetitive head impacts across all levels of the sport, including youth and college football.
