Pakistan to honour Mumbai doctors behind Jinnah’s 1946 medical secret

India

  • In 1946, Mumbai doctors Jal Ratanji Patel and Jal Dhaybho-Koo diagnosed Muhammad Ali Jinnah with advanced tuberculosis.
  • The two doctors kept his condition confidential. Some historians say knowing Jinnah was seriously ill may have led leaders to delay Partition talks, hoping the demand for Pakistan would weaken after his death.
  • Pakistan has now nominated both doctors posthumously for the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, recognising their medical confidentiality. The honours are expected to be formally presented at a ceremony in March 2027.
