PM Modi launches talent push to improve India’s Olympic medal chances
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 27, said India does not participate in nearly half of Olympic sports and needs to expand its presence to improve medal prospects.
- Addressing the Khelo India Dialogue, PM Modi said India participated in only 13 sports at the 2012 Olympics, missing opportunities in more than 20 disciplines.
- He highlighted sports like surfing and sports climbing where India has potential due to its coastline, mountains and diverse geography but has limited global participation.
- As part of preparations for the 2036 Olympics, the government plans a nationwide talent hunt to identify athletes aged 5 to 15 years and train them for different sports.
