Popular sugar substitute xylitol linked to higher heart attack and stroke risk
- Xylitol is widely used in chewing gum, jam, yoghurt, ice cream, toothpaste and other low-sugar products.
- Researchers studied 17,710 people and compared those with the highest and lowest blood levels of xylitol.
- People with the highest xylitol levels were 57% more likely to die or suffer a heart attack or stroke within six years.
- The study found an association, not proof that xylitol causes these events; researchers say more studies are needed.
