Rural Russia bears the brunt of school closures, with numbers down 45% since 2000
- Russia's secondary schools have fallen from about 68,800 in 2000 to just under 38,000 this year.
- That is a drop of roughly 45 per cent, with rural communities losing the most, researchers say.
- The school-age population fell only 13.5 per cent over the same period, from 20.5 million.
- An optimisation programme begun in 2001 made smaller schools financially unviable to run.
