Russia’s parliamentary election begins: Who is on the ballot and why does it matter?
- Russians are voting from September 18–20 to elect all 450 members of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament.
- United Russia, President Vladimir Putin’s governing party, won over two-thirds of Duma seats in 2021 and is expected to remain dominant.
- The Communist Party, Liberal Democratic Party and New People Party are among the main parties competing, while war-opposing Yabloko was removed from the party-list ballot in August.
- The election is the first parliamentary vote since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, amid a slowing economy and Ukrainian drone attacks.
