- US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said the weapons are meant to protect American and allied forces from hostile actions in space.
- The US has not revealed what the space-based weapons are, saying keeping their capabilities unclear can help deter adversaries.
- The disclosure comes amid growing concerns that competition between the US, China and Russia could fuel a new arms race in space.
