Amazon to shut Mechanical Turk after 21 years as AI reshapes digital work
- Amazon will shut down Mechanical Turk MTurk on September 30, 2026, ending the crowdsourcing service launched in 2005.
- MTurk paid people to complete small online tasks such as data labelling, transcription, surveys and image classification.
- The service was built around what Amazon called “Artificial Artificial Intelligence”, using humans for tasks computers struggled to perform.
- MTurk’s relevance declined as AI systems improved and newer data-labelling platforms emerged; Amazon had already stopped new requester registrations.
