BNP veteran takes Bangladesh's presidency after 35 years of unopposed picks
- Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir won 255 votes to 88 for Oli Ahmad, a retired colonel of 84 backed by Jamaat-e-Islami.
- He is 78, and led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party as its secretary general for about fifteen years before this.
- The seat fell vacant last month when Mohammed Shahabuddin, an ally of the ousted Sheikh Hasina, resigned.
- This was the first contested presidential vote in Bangladesh since 1991, and he takes oath at Bangabhaban on Friday.
