District collectors can now grant citizenship in eight border regions
- The Union Home Ministry has authorised district collectors in six border states and two Union Territories to grant Indian citizenship to eligible foreigners.
- The states are Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, West Bengal, Assam and Tripura, while Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are also covered.
- Collectors can now receive, scrutinise and decide citizenship applications for registration or naturalisation under the Citizenship Act.
- The new rules replace the earlier system in these areas, with collectors able to grant citizenship to applicants they consider fit and proper.
