IIIT-Delhi researchers build AI dataset to track crops and predict yields using satellites
- IIIT-Delhi and the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation created SICKLE, an AI dataset for crop monitoring.
- It combines data from three satellites with field information from 388 farms and 21 crop types.
- The dataset has about 209,000 satellite images, mainly covering farms in Tamil Nadu’s Cauvery Delta.
- AI can use it to identify crops, track sowing and harvesting, and estimate yields without relying only on field surveys.
