India mandates real-time identity checks before new SIMs
- India now requires telecom operators to verify customer identities in real time before issuing new SIMs.
- Details will be checked through the Digital Intelligence Platform to block fake or suspicious identities.
- The government is also looking to strengthen monitoring of the number of SIM cards registered in an individual's name.
- At present, an individual can hold a maximum of nine SIM cards, while the limit is six in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the north eastern states.
