India tests waste plastic mixed with bitumen for first bituminous highway stretch
- Waste plastic has been mixed directly with bitumen for the first time on a pilot section of NH-44 in Jhansi.
- The new method could cut conventional bitumen use by around 4%, reducing demand for the largely imported material.
- The modified bitumen may cost around 20% less than conventional bitumen, officials involved in the pilot said.
- IIT-BHU developed the technology, which will be monitored to assess its long-term performance and suitability.
