Indian scientists create next-generation cancer drug that targets only tumour cells
- Scientists from the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology IASST and IIT Guwahati developed a new cancer drug called RK-251.
- RK-251 is designed to become active mainly inside tumour cells, where it releases NBDHEX, short for 6-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-ylthiohexanol, an experimental anticancer compound.
- It uses higher reactive oxygen species in cancer cells to trigger the drug release.
- Early tests showed promise against triple-negative breast cancer with less harm to healthy cells.
