India’s big bet on biogas: What is the ₹23,731 crore GOBARdhan scheme?
- The Union Cabinet approved the ₹23,731-crore GOBARdhan scheme on August 6 to expand India’s bioenergy ecosystem.
- GOBARdhan will turn cattle dung, crop residue, kitchen waste and other organic waste into biogas and bio-slurry.
- The scheme will run from FY27 to FY36, with Compressed Biogas CBG at the centre of India’s future energy mix.
- It aims to reduce fossil-fuel use, create rural jobs and save over ₹40,000 crore in foreign exchange over 10 years.
