Meet Kim Ji-on, the 12-year-old who invented a life-saving fire escape device
- 12-year-old South Korean student Kim Ji-on invented a phone grip that doubles as an emergency breathing aid during fires.
- The idea came after she learned about a deadly hotel fire in Bucheon and later visited a fire station during a school trip.
- The grip contains activated carbon fibre and a nonwoven filter to absorb harmful gases and trap fine particles when unfolded over the nose and mouth.
- Kim won the Presidential Award at South Korea’s 2026 Youth Invention Festival and plans to donate her 3 million won prize money to people in developing countries.
