Meet Leopardus tilcayo, the newly discovered wild cat species
- Scientists confirmed a new species, Leopardus tilcayo, from Bolivia’s forests, with the findings published in Current Biology.
- The discovery came from DNA analysis of a rescued cat called “Tigrino,” previously mistaken for other tiger cats.
- Researchers found tiger cats likely include five species instead of three, bringing the total number of feline species to 44 or more.
- Experts say the discovery shows how much biodiversity remains undocumented, especially in less-studied regions around the world.
